When you write each response, start with the name of a trusted friend and write as if the message was just for that friend. Then edit out the friends name and set up the message so that your autoresponder takes over and inserts the prospects name.

Personalization isn’t just for emails – use it as an intro to your ezine, too: ‘Hi, Susan, here’s some great new ideas for using the XZY Information system that I know you’ll appreciate. Use the name that the prospect gives in the information gathering form.

To get a better open rate on your emails, use the prospects name in the subject line. When you personalize the subject line, it will get noticed more, and have a better open rate.

Add the name naturally as it would occur in conversation. Internet marketers can make the mistake of over-using the name just because it’s easy to insert electronically. Read the message aloud.

Let your personality shine through, and develop your own style. Keep that style through out your messages, and you will be easily recognized. It’s really another form of ‘branding’. Just like logos or sayings have become associated with different companies and products. So to can your unique style of writing.

Would you use the name that many times or does it sound phony? Yes, people love the sound of their own names, but when it’s over used, the reaction is that you’re being a fake and that send the buyer fleeing. Be yourself, and write as if you’re talking to someone you know, and also as if they know you.

Don’t let spell check defeat you. First, be extremely careful when you type a name into the autoresponder list. If the name was automatically added to a list, don’t change it. Some names are spelled differently on purpose.

There is an ongoing dispute between Teresa and Theresa as to which is the accurate spelling of the name. Answer: the way she wants it! Also, be careful that the name isn’t changed in the final spell check.

Avoid the marital status question. Don’t add Ms, Miss or Mrs to any correspondence. For one thing, email isn’t that formal. You don’t need to guess on this one or you’ll surely be wrong more often than right.

While the generic ‘Dear Friend’ or ‘Dear Internet Marketing Colleague’ seems impersonal, at least it doesn’t make obvious mistakes that are humorous to some people and blatantly offensive to others.

Use the name when you ask for the order. Remember to be personal when you make the final pitch. What’s more appealing to you: ‘Everyone needs this marketing package to increase sales’ or ‘I want to see you enjoy the kind of success I’ve had with this product – so, Stan, are you ready to make serious money online? If you are then click here…but wait, Stan, I’ve got one more bonus that’s just what you need!’

That’s a personal close using the name and showing interest in the prospects success. So keep it real, keep it personal and keep making contact with your list so that the first sale isn’t the last one.

It is scary when the money you were counting on for retirement, education, or your home is rapidly declining in value. Don’t panic though. Here are some 5 tips to help you survive:

1. People are living longer:

Males that reach the age of 65 nowadays will have a 49% chance of living to 86. Women will have a 49% chance of living to age 89. With that in mind, it’s obvious that you will still need the help of equities (stocks and stock mutual funds) to help you grow your portfolio and keep ahead of taxes and inflation.
Don’t abandon these investments.

2. Rebalance where necessary.

Take a look at your portfolio winners. If you had targeted say 20% in international and it is now 30% of your portfolio. Sell enough to bring it back down to 20% and use that cash to invest in another sector that you don’t own. Remember that you don’t have a realized loss until you sell. Take just enough of a loss to offset the gain that you took above, and then you will pay no tax on the transaction.

3. Diversify.

Don’t have any winners? Then you weren’t diversified enough to begin with. You should have had enough in each asset class (large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, international, etc.) and each style (growth, value, blend, balanced, etc.) to create an investment plan to reach the return you need with the risk you are comfortable with, and in the time period that you targeted. Believe it or not, there are some mutual funds that have managed to keep their returns higher than the more than 23% loss of the S&P500 Index this year. There are a lot of free resources such as morningstar.com that will give you the data you need to diversify and feel better about your holdings.

4. Make decisions now.

Act now. Don’t look for bottoms. You don’t ever know where the bottom is but you do know that stocks are steadily getting cheaper and there are some fantastic buys out there. You may not have control over the market but you do have control over what you buy and what you sell. Don’t wait.

5. Get a guaranteed income for life.

Along with positions of cash, bonds, and equities, a fixed annuity should play a part in a portfolio of someone close to working part-time or retiring altogether. An annuity is an insurance contract that in return for a lump sum of money gives you a steady fixed stream of income that is guaranteed for your life or the life of you and your spouse. For people who want to spread out their risk, this is an excellent addition to a portfolio. The downside is that you don’t get any inflation protection since the payments remain the same. The upside is that you get an income stream guaranteed by the insurer so you don’t have to worry about managing the money. Of course, you need to make sure the insurer is financially strong enough to be able to pay you throughout the term of the contract.

People like Floyd Odlum made millions during the Great Depression, not by fleeing into cash and bonds but by buying into stocks as the market dropped. His motto during the crash was: “There’s a better chance to make money now than ever before.”

Don’t lose this opportunity to arrange your portfolio to meet your future needs. Follow the five steps above, and you won’t have to worry about what the stock market is doing ever again.

Seems like there’s no end to the indigestion-inducing economic news. Recently I woke up to the news that the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price index had fallen by 17.4 percent from a year earlier. Even worse, was the indication that things were accelerating—with home prices having decreased 1.8% in September from prior months. This is the biggest drop since the Shiller index first started reporting.

Then on the way into the kitchen I heard the Commerce department announce that the gross domestic product had dropped an annual 0.5%, as the household spending was at the lowest level since 1980. I needed a shot of caffeine and some better news to lift my spirits.

I got what I needed half way through my first cup of coffee—consumer confidence had gone up to 44.9, not including cost of food and gas. Sure, it was the second worst reading since 1974, but at least it was an improvement from October’s record low of 38.8.

Then I heard that retailers from Best Buy to Nordstrom were cutting their revenue forecast and to expect a bleak Christmas season. This was not really breaking news, so I decided to sit back and enjoy another cup.

The economic news just reconfirms what we already know—the U.S. is in a contractionary spiral. Lenders have cut bank credit, consumer spending has fallen dramatically, corporations are cutting back on capital expenditures and thousands of employees are losing their jobs.

What can one do while witnessing the ripple effects of a credit crisis that started 15 months ago except to react with contempt and frustration? Could things possibly get more out of control? Apparently so, because a few minutes later came breaking news as the Fed unveiled a new $800 billion bailout package and the U.S. has pledged up to $7.7 trillion to ease unfrozen credit.

I wanted to knock my head against the wall and scream, “Why now? If you have to do this, why do it today? Why didn’t you do this12 months ago?” It boggles the mind to consider that these so-called financial experts didn’t foresee the consequences of the credit crisis and the extent of the damage that would be inflicted.

Nevertheless, “Helicopter” Ben and Paulson were in complete denial a year ago. Now 15 months later they expect investors and consumers to exchange their “wait and see” positions for a “do it now” attitude and hurl headlong into reckless investment and consumption.

In my opinion, this is an all-out assault on capitalism’s worst crisis since the Great Depression. The U.S. is taking the role of both lender and borrower of last resort for the global economy. The Fed Chairman as well as the Treasury Secretary are giving the store away and are no longer waiting for Obama to come to office. But in spite of their taking unprecedented actions, none of it so far has gotten any meaningful traction. Credit markets are still collapsing, stock prices are plunging, and the world economy is sinking into a recession, though some are now admitting that we’re already there.

We trusted that the new plan would work as the threads of the economy are unraveling and with them, the opportunities of stemming further decline into another depression.

There has already been a substantial reduction in wages and shell-shocked investors are fleeing to super safe treasury securities, even though three-month T-bill rates dropped last week to 0.1 percent, the lowest since at least January 1940.

As we approach the holiday season everybody is scrambling. How can they unlock the contraction in consumer demand for credit and the supply of credit? The Fed seems to be making it up as they go along all in an effort to keep from sliding into a deeper recession and trying to avoid a depression.

The actions to prevent deflation, ignite economic activity and reduce the cost of availability of credit for the purchases of homes is welcome, but again . . why now? I understand their intentions. But Bernanke and Paulson were the ones that allowed Lehman to tumble. They were the ones that crafted the first $700 billion bailout package without really knowing exactly what to do with it.

Then they hastily hammered out a Citigroup rescue plan over Domino’s Pizza, a plan that was so fragmented, one wonders whether it was drafted on the back of a napkin.

Citigroup bailout notwithstanding, do not expect investors to come flocking to the markets. These two so-called financial experts have done nothing to restore investor confidence and they do not have the ability to calm the markets in either the short or long term. That said, at least they are going through the motions of trying to fix a colossal mess that has already wiped the last of the U.S. investment banks off the map.

Nevertheless it is unsettling to investors and taxpayers that the cost of this latest bailout will exceed 4.6 trillion dollars! This is by far the largest outlay of capital in American history. Even if you were to go back and compare it to all the expenditures from the Marshal plan to the invasion of Iraq, the total amount would come to $3.92 trillion. Only World War II came close with a price tag of 3.36 trillion adjusted for inflation.

At the end of the day, whether you call it lending or spending, it’s still U.S. tax dollars blowin’ in the wind. And the American taxpayers end up holding the mystery bag of collateral. I say “mystery” because nobody has a clue what’s inside; they don’t know now, and they probably never will. In fact, some people are too young to even recognize that this is by far the worst financial crisis in two generations.

And to add insult to injury, the daily developing news is being shot out across the wires at such a rapid-fire pace, virtually no one has the ability to keep up with it, much less to question the sanity of what’s going on.

Home prices falling, GDP dropping, weak consumer spending, the financial markets in disarray, an economic team that keeps tripping and stumbling into walls, and now we’re holding our breath to find out what’s to become of a failing auto industry. If we’re to survive this, somebody had better come up with a workable plan—one that provides clear transparency, open communications and fewer surprises. Because as it turns out, people by nature do not like surprises, whether it’s good news or bad.

Habits you use in network marketing can be a killer. We must be aware of exactly what we are doing that causes us not to find the victory that we so strongly desire. But before we can “fly right and to run great” it might help to examine our lives.

My cause is preceded by a strong vision. This vision is to become completely and totally responsible to earn a substantial weekly income for my family, my church and for generations to come. It is to turn my mission into a ministry as soon as possible, and to do it with the most wholesome of causes: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. If this number one rule is not how you currently feel about your network marketing business, than get out now and read no more, please.

You see statistics show, that before the end of the first year 97% of all network marketing people quit. They quit because they were losing money which might make sense to most, but I disagree. For some, like me, still manage to stay plugged-in and unhappily continue to lose money. You see, I live on SS and spend twice what SS pays me. My hope is in my cause and the vision is so strong I can taste it. I’m a network marketing junky: addicted!

You qualify as a network marketing junky when you have financial hemorrhaging to support your habit. My habit continues to this very day to the tune of at least $20,000 over the last 3 years. This is ridiculous, but the nay-sayers are flat out wrong…This junky will make it, I will see my dream fulfilled, I will know change, and things will change around me.

Over these last 4 years, because of my network marketing pressures I’ve gone back to church, I have been tithing, and I read the Bible and pray each and every day. I have been a born-again-spirit-filled believer for 32 years, but yet no financial independence, not yet anyway. This results in my willingness to change!

I invite you to ponder your life and see what could have possibly caused you to succumb to discouragement and disappointment as many sometimes do. Today you may find that your habits in network marketing are like a butterfly going from flower to flower, promise to promise, opportunity to opportunity. I had 6 opportunities in the last 3 years, but I’m still at it.

For example, when I was 10 years old, Dad bought me an inexpensive model airplane motor along with a huge free flight model. We went back to the hobby shop for help with the motor…It wouldn’t start. My father invented a “U” shaped attachment for our press drill that fit around the prop and we spent hours cranking away all to no avail. Mom used to hound me to get that plane finished. I just couldn’t finish it. The motor never, never started, so we gave up. The model remained unfinished and in plain view for years to remind me, as Mom did, of my failure. I was to discouraged and too broke to finish it.

I think the next venture was raising tropical fish. I had 4 fish tanks and once I had hatched 500 kissing grammies at one point. I think 2 or 3 lived to grow up. How discouraging was that? Then it was parakeets with a large outside aviary that I built, because I wanted to breed and sell them. That lasted about a year and I was soon discouraged and profitless.

Before my first car, it was HO model railroading with an unfinished layout. Next it was automobiles and today I’m still “car crazy”. I had such great plans for a 1934 flamingo pink, 5 window Ford coupe, chopped and channeled, with a V8 engine. I rebuilt the engine on my back porch and could proudly proclaim to be the owner of one of the few hot rods in New Jersey in 1952. I was a junior in high school. I never really finished that hot rod because it needed chrome and interior work and I just couldn’t earn enough to accomplish.

Now as I look back it’s sad to see all these unfinished and unrealized dreams in my life, and I must ask what affect such a pass has in my life today. Are these really negative memories? In truth they are, because completion was never realized. I need the victory over negatives today. Do you as well?

Enough, so lets get over such matters together using this wonderful vehicle of network marketing. Network marketing helps make new people. It is your blessing and sometimes in disguise. If you are loosing money then know that you are simply investing in yourself. You are learning how to better relate to others. The money you are loosing is just paying for your education. Know this and you will find your victory. Don’t give up like I used to. For you see these matters are why today I have been bouncing from one “opportunity” to another like that butterfly. Never seeing things through to completion, without discipline, flighty, easily discouraged and impatient.

Here’s another example and my final point. Mom was in the habit of protecting me. There were lots of things that I had to “be careful” with: Climbing trees, running, swimming, etc, were all things to be feared. she worried a lot.

I’ll never forget one of my first memories. I was told to “be careful” crossing the street and to be sure to look up and down for cars. So there I was standing on the curb and turning to look at my worrisome Mom standing in the window watching over me while I was looking up and down wondering why I was doing such a strange thing, looking up and down. Even at 4 years old I knew cars were not up in the air. Maybe I just didn’t listen. Today it’s laughable, but it was about being careful due to the application of fear.

I really grew up learning more fears than I needed to learn. Fears coupled with all those negatives do not add up to a conducive character for finding my dream today.

Fear, uncertainty and doubt have ruled my life. If you have suffered from much the same patterns in your life than now is the time to kill such characteristics. A new book is out that will help you understand the “Law of Attraction”. Today fears will flee in love and negatives are just ways to know the positives in life.

The Secret will help you fight the negatives. What ever you do you must stay with your quest through to victory, to realize all your dreams and satisfy your cause. Get over yourself, let God, and let your sponsors help you. Be obedient, practice constantly with love, with certainty and with conviction.

Find one “opportunity”, stick with it until it flies, runs, looks great, and then polish it into your dream of financial independence. Be certain to hook a cause to your dream and you will succeed.

This morning I have read what I feel is a very useful piece on Vanguard’s website – Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

The article gives a brief summary of current happennings on the markets and concludes by asking what action, if any, should investors be taking?

It suggets the following courses of action (directly taken from the article):

Do nothing. Sit it out and wait for the upturn. The beauty of this strategy is that you stay invested so when the market recovers you will benefit from any upturn. History shows us that sharemarkets have suffered many setbacks over the years and recovered to higher heights. Check out Vanguard’s updated interactive index chart for a long-term market perspective.

The truth is there is no right or wrong time to invest and being out of the market can cost vital performance. An AMP Capital report found that investors who stay in the market end up better off than those who flee. In fact, an investor with a $100,000 Australian share portfolio who stayed in the market over the last 10 years to 30 May 2008 would have ended up $179,544 better off than one who missed the best 30 days of sharemarket performance (based on the ASX 200 Accumulation Index to 30 May 2008).

If you have reservations about your investment strategy in the current investment climate it can be well worthwhile seeking the advice of a professional financial adviser. An adviser can sit down with you and talk you about your personal circumstances, investment goals and suggest the most appropriate strategy for your needs. This is especially important if you have a high growth strategy and are finding it difficult to sleep at night.

Drip feed your investments. Part of the beauty of compulsory super is that your money isn’t invested all at once. Rather, a set amount is invested at regular intervals. This strategy, called dollar cost averaging, can help to average out market fluctuations over time. This is a strategy the self-employed can take advantage of as well.

Double check your risk profile. You may find that you overestimated your risk tolerance level when markets were more stable. Steve Utkus says investors can overestimate the odds and become overconfident in rising markets. Risk profiling is best conducted under the guidance of a professional financial adviser.

There is no surprise that I fully concur with the thoughts pointed out by Vanguard. I particularly like the last point. Now is the time to be reconsidering your risk profile. Risk profiling is a difficult task. When you are asked the question how would you feel if your investments fell by 10,20,30,40% it is difficult to provide an accurate response if you have never experienced such falls. After 9 months (or more for listed property investors) of really tough conditions the question to be asking yourself is how have you gone handling not only the 25% or more falls on equity markets but also the significant turbulence (volatility)?

If your answer is that you are finding it extremely uncomfortable it may make sense to ease back on your growth asset allocation. Most likely this will have occurred automatically as growth investment values have fallen and defensive assets remained steady but produced income. However a decision will need to made when rebalancing your portfolio whether to set your growth assets back at the original percentage level.

If your portfolio still has too great an exposure to growth assets it may have to be a gradual process to rebalance to a more defensive position as ideally you do not want to be realising losses and then see the market turn back up sharply. One way would be to make sure you don’t reinvest income and dividends as they come into portfolios, rather set these aside in cash and fixed interest security investments and by doing so rebalance your portfolio towards a more defensive setting.

Please get in touch if you wanted to discuss any of these points in more detail.
