At Mexican flea markets everyone seems to sell the same sort of thing (dishes, figureines, hammocks, shot glasses, etc). I was wondering if anyone knew how much those sellers paid for their stuff. For example, hammocks were running about $350 pesos, which could be bartered down to about $200. How much did they pay for one of those hammocks (or whatever else)?

If you drive around the Yucatan, you’ll pass through small villages. If you look through the doorways of the small huts, you’ll see some with a hamaca loom (2 upright poles set about six feet apart). The woman that lives there will work at weaving as time allows, between preparing meals and taking care of the animals. Then a trader will come by and all the hammocks the woman has made since the last time he came by. The money may allow the woman to buy another chicken or a turkey. She may get 100 pesos for a one person size and 250 pesos for a matrimonial size. But it’s all what the trader can negotiate. If the woman really needs the money, she might take less. But she knows how many hours she’s put into making each one, so she may wait for the next trader to come along and see if she can get more money.
